I have a new theory, let’s see if I can get through this without getting lost. The various versions of “Highlander” are not parallel universes but alternate timelines in the same universe.
Originally Ramirez and Conner survived to the modern-age together, along with the Kurgan, yes the Kurgan was good. Conner, Ramirez, the Kurgan were companions, friends. When Earth’s interstellar-age arrived they took to the stars.
Eventually the three, along with others, came across a planet, Zeist, that had been overthrown by evil immortals. Being professional heroes, lead by Ramirez, they tried to free the inhabitance of Zeist and failed. As punishment for their “crimes” they were banished to Earth’s past and were forced to relive their entire lives all over again.
The Kurgan, unable to cope with reliving the tragedy of his past, became bitter and callused, blaming Ramirez and Conner for what happened on Zeist. This is why the Kurgan knew where to find Conner and sought him out in battle, this is also how Ramirez knew where to find Conner, and also the fact that Conner knew exactly where to get Duncan when he died. Conner forgot about Zeist but the Kurgan did not.
That’s because in the second or third timeline, however many iterations you wan to go through, he was killed in the late twentieth century, but he still ties into the story, because in the first “Highlander” movie he is reacting to what happened on Zeist. Conner forgot Zeist, when he starts to remember he misinterprets the flashbacks.
That’s a hard thing to answer and will require some thought. Time travel is impossible to control, though it seems like you can at first. Once you start the ball rolling you can never stop it, things in the time stream can still change, Duncan, Ramirez, the Kurgan’s fates are still undecided, they can return. I think Ramirez was able to return in H2 due to a temporal paradox. The Kurgan can still even return as a hero.

But kurgan isn't in the movie at all....

Interesting... hard to follow yet still interesting. Only one thing bugs me: Once they lose their heads, they remain dead or they go through all the reliving process again?
